Happy New Year everyone! 2010 has been a pretty crazy year, with a lot of exciting things happening from the launch of Droplet Series 2 in February to working with Ubisoft at Aardman and designing the Raving Rabbids site!
It’s been a lot of hard work and working full time for Aards and then coming home to do my own thing in my own time has been tough but I think I’ve finally understood the balance I need to get this year. I used to beat myself up if I wasn’t regularly outputting new work under the JamFactory banner but this year I’ve learnt to let go, it doesn’t matter. It’s not a race and there’s no rush to be creative. I’m being creative and making things at Aardman all day long, it just takes longer to show off my work there because the projects are much grander and therefore take a lot longer to complete. Being more relaxed has enabled me to take time out and learn new things, soaking up fresh inspiration and generally looking at things in a different way.
I realised that trying to juggle so many things meant I lost focus on individual projects, I want to scale right back and just concentrate on one thing in my own time, so next year will be my bike film BOIKZMOIND, something I’m really excited working on and also something that is making me learn alot too, so focusing on singular projects is definitely the way forward for me.
I used to fret about not putting work out regularly, because I was terrified that if I stopped then people would forget about me. It’s silly I know, but I feel I only got to where I am today by regularly creating work and putting it out there for all to see. It wasn’t until I was chatting to Gav Hoffman that I came to a realisation; when a race car goes into the pits for a tune up and is sitting there motionless, it’s no less a race car, you know that it will get going again momentarily. Again, I know that sounds silly and I’m not saying that I’m a race car of the design world as I’m not at all, but that statement really makes sense to me and changed my perception of constantly having to output work.
So, in light of that, you might not see anything new from me for a few days, weeks or months but rest assured I’m no less creative than I have been, if anything I’m more hungry to create as I’ve got new ideas, plans and mediums i want to explore and hopefully 2011 is going to allow me to do that!
I’d like to say that I’m also incredibly grateful to you, for taking the time to read my blog and look at the stuff I’ve been making throughout the year, thank you.
I hope you have a great night and usher in the new year in whatever way you choose! Have fun and I’ll see you on the other side, 2011 is going to be big!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
- Gav.
